Your Energetic Toddler Is Welcome At Your Newborn Session

Your toddler is not only welcome to your newborn photoshoot, but they make the day really special.

They bring big, loving energy and joy to the session. Plus, your toddler is now a big brother, so we want him to be part of this celebratory moment for your family.

If you haven’t already, I have an entire post on how to help your toddler welcome home their new sibling. It offers tips and ideas on making the big transition as smooth as possible for your older child.

Here are a few tips on how to help your toddler prepare for the photoshoot, and what to expect during the portrait session.

How to Prepare Your Toddler for the Newborn Session

Here are my three best tips to help you prepare your toddler for the upcoming newborn photo session.

1. Practice Gentle Hands - Have your toddler practice using gentle hands with the baby before the sessions. You can practice being very gentle with a doll or stuffed animal before the baby is born. Then carefully practice during any interactions with his newborn siblings before the session. This will help us during any posing during the session. Your newborn’s safety is our top priority, and we’ll make sure to be extra careful in any poses with your toddler and newborn.

2. Get them Excited About the Session - Talk up the session like it’s going to be the most fun ever. Explain that you’re going to go see your friend Karen and spend time in her super fun studio! Your toddler will feed off your excitement and feel ready heading into the big day.

3. Relax - Mama, you can let go and relax heading into the session. We’ve truly got you covered. My assistant and I both have children and love spending time with tiny humans. We have simple toys and little games that we’ll play with your toddler, plus many, many tricks up our sleeves to get the perfect shots during the photoshoot. During the session, we’ll document your toddler individually by letting him be himself, so we can capture his true personality in your portraits.

What if Your Toddler Doesn’t Cooperate During the Newborn Session?

Mama, is your biggest worry that your toddler won’t cooperate during the portrait session? I know it might be hard to imagine your sweet, rambunctious toddler sitting still for a photo. Honestly, you might be surprised at how well your toddler does during your time in the studio. I have years of experience photographing families and children and can pretty much always get your tiny human to play my little games and pose for a portrait.

Studio Newborn Portrait Photographer

Toddlers tend to do really well in the studio. The studio offers a warm, comfortable environment for your whole family to relax. Since we’re safe inside, your toddler won’t be able to run too far or get too distracted by something going on nearby. My assistant will be able to play with your toddler while we document your newborn’s first official portraits. It’s such a special time for your child, and we love being able to include him in the session. If you have any questions or wish to schedule a call, please send me a message here.
