How to Feel Less Awkward in Front of the Camera
Do you feel awkward being in front of the camera? You are far from alone.
In fact, I think many of my clients would say that they feel awkward in front of the camera. It’s a concern that gets brought up during my initial consult during the photography booking process.
I’ve heard -
“We’re not photogenic.”
“My husband/partner really isn’t into pictures.”
“We’ve never done this before…”
And on and on.
It’s only natural to feel a little nervous before a photo session when you haven’t done it before or in a long time. Maybe your partner has expressed nervousness about being in front of the camera. The good news is that there are ways we can overcome these feelings and allow you to truly let go and enjoy the session.
Here are my top five tips to feel less awkward in front of the camera and truly enjoy your maternity portrait session.
5 Tips to Feel Less Awkward in Front of the Camera
1. Find a Photographer You Trust - Finding a photographer you can trust will help you and your partner feel more comfortable heading into the session. Review your photographer's work and read testimonials to hear from past clients.
2. Choose Outfits You Love - Choose outfits that you love and are excited to wear for your session. You’ll look forward to wearing your fun outfit for the session and showing off your bump. Save time and money by choosing something from my client wardrobe. My client wardrobe has dresses in many different colours, styles, and sizes. The best part is that you won’t have to purchase an outfit that you’ll likely wear once. Before the day of the session, clients are invited to the studio to select outfits from my wardrobe.
3. Professional Hair and Makeup - Professional hair and makeup on the day of your session are actually good for you and your partner. Your professionally applied hair and makeup will make you feel pampered, confident, and relaxed. Because you’re so relaxed and confident, your partner will feel it too.
4. Focus on Your Family - If you focus on your love for each other and your sweet baby, you’ll naturally create beautiful images. You can’t help it. Your joy will radiate from your faces and translate perfectly for the camera. We don’t do any stuffy or stiff poses and instead gently pose on what naturally flows during the session.
5. Let Go of Expectations - Try and just let go of any expectations you have of yourself and your partner. If you can let go and just enjoy the experience of celebrating this special time in your life, the images will look amazing. With a baby on the way, you won’t be able to help but smile during your session.
