Behind the Scenes - Portrait Photography with Reflections of Life
Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of those Pinterest-worthy family photo shoots? Typically, the burden of the planning, the shopping, and the getting dressed up all fall on the mama’s shoulders (sound familiar?). But at Reflections of Life, I do things a little differently.
I have four sweet little (and not-so-little-anymore) children of my own and have been in your shoes. It feels like an awful lot of work to prepare for a family photoshoot that the husband scoffs at and the kids cry about. You know in your heart how important it is to capture the fleeting milestones of your kids’ lives but you feel exhausted at the thought of planning for something they might not enjoy anyway. I want you to know I am here to melt away all of your worries. I am here to take the burden off your shoulders so you (and your family) can enjoy each other’s company in my studio.
The Reflections of Life Experience
Clothing Selection
You may have inherited an adorable gown for your baby, but picking out clothing for yourself is typically so much harder. Not only does it feel wasteful to spend all of your precious time scouring the internet for the perfect flowy dress, but it seems impractical to spend money on something when you might not wear it again. I have curated a gorgeous collection of clothing to complement your body and let you feel naturally confident and beautiful. View more about that here.
Hair and Makeup
I know what it looks like for a family the morning of a photoshoot. Laying out clothes, ironing stubborn creases, wrestling your little ones into their outfits, hoping they don’t find messy snacks in that short time span. You urge your husband to finish getting ready and then finally, you have 30 minutes to dry your hair and put on makeup that will make her look a little less tired. Mama, you deserve to look and feel your very best on the day of your photoshoot. Leave that pampering to the professionals once you get to my studio. While your husband and children play in our safe space, I’ll prepare your outfit selection. My hair and makeup artist will give you a look that enhances your beauty. View more about that here.
Portrait Experience
Unlike studio photography sessions of the past, you won’t experience stiff and awkward posing. I use a lifestyle approach. We’ll talk and laugh, keep the props to a minimum, and focus on the people you love. I’ll guide you gently to adjust your body in a way that is most comfortable and flattering in photos. With a relaxed experience like this, even the most stubborn of dads and little ones can’t wait to return to the studio. View more about that here.
Image Reveal and Heirloom Selection
Not sure what you’ll want to do with the photos, but know you just couldn’t imagine them getting lost in a computer folder somewhere? Just one week after your portraits are taken, you’ll pop back into the studio to see them for the first time on the big projection screen. After some oohs and ahhs (and maybe a few happy tears), we’ll design the perfect album and wall decor with your home and family in mind. View more about that here.

Hi there, I'm Karen! I am obsessed with newborn baby yawns, giggling kids, and fancy flavoured tea. I'm a mama of four who understands the busyness of everyday life and I've learned how to embrace and enjoy the beauty of it through lifestyle photography. I know what it’s like to look back on my children’s first years and feel like they flew by so quickly. I don’t want any other mamas to forget what their baby’s little fingers and toes looked like all curled up. My hope is that I can help you create albums and prints to serve as physical reminders of these sweet times throughout your baby’s early years. Contact me for info.
