What You Need to Know About Newborn Photography Safety
Keeping your newborn safe and happy during your session is my top priority.
Many moms look forward to their newborn photography session. You finally got to meet your sweet baby, and now it’s time to photograph all their perfect little features.
As you research newborn photographers, it’s important to look for two things. One whose work you love. And one that follows newborn safety guidelines. You’re welcome to read my thoughts on why it’s so important to work with a professional newborn photographer here.
I’d love to share six things you need to know about newborn photography safety to help you choose the best photographer for your family.
Newborn Photography Safety
Below is the minimum you should expect from your newborn photographer. I’m more than happy to do all of these and more.
Clean Studio - Before a newborn session, I make sure everything in my studio is thoroughly wiped down and cleaned. All wardrobe pieces and accessories are washed between sessions as well. In fact, I do this type of cleaning between each session.
Prioritize Health - If I’m not feeling well, or anyone in my family isn’t feeling well, I will reschedule the session. I also ask the same of your family. If anyone in your family isn’t feeling well, let’s reschedule for a different time.
Baby-Led Posing - Baby-led posing is very important to me and is the safest for baby. I never force baby into an uncomfortable or unsafe position. Your baby is in charge of the session and we honor that with every pose. We’ll wrap baby into a comfortable and clean wrap and photograph baby in your arms or safely placed on a pillow. If baby isn’t feeling a certain pose, we gently move to the next one with no stress. All you need to do is love on your baby, and I’ll be able to capture the perfect portraits for you.
Generous Session Time - I schedule ample time for my newborn sessions. My attention is all on you and your sweet family. That way, we’re not in any sort of rush. No one is pressured to hurry up. This is especially important if we’re including older children or even your dog. Having plenty of time means we can make sure everyone is comfortable and happy.
Soothing and Feeding Breaks as Needed - Speaking of that, I welcome soothing and feeding breaks as needed. Your newborn is a brand-new baby and not a model. So, I expect that your newborn will need at least one or not more during the session. It’s really no problem at all.
Experience and Training - In the newborn photography industry, it’s hard to know what trainings and certifications are legit. Always feel free to ask a potential photographer about any training they’ve completed or how they continue their education. I truly enjoy learning from some of the best newborn photographers in the industry. I’ve been honored to learn in person from Kelly Brown, Brittany Elise Anderson, Leigh Ripps and have participated in countless in-person and online newborn workshops.
