What to Expect at Your First Maternity Session
Maternity Photography to Celebrate Your Next Chapter
When you’re preparing to welcome your first baby into the world, you deserve time to celebrate this major milestone in your life. You’ve made a registry, attended baby showers, and you’ve made (many) shopping trips while designing the nursery … but in all this whirlwind of preparations, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by your to-do list.
Don’t forget to take a minute to soak up this incredible moment as you await your first child. A maternity photo session at Reflections is a luxurious and memorable way to mark this special moment – one that falls in between your magical beginning as a couple, and your next chapter of family life.
Family Spotlight:
I was blessed to have met this sweet couple, Kylee and Stephen for the first time earlier this summer while they were expecting. I got the good news that their baby boy Dax arrived in mid-August and we’re now planning their newborn session.
What They Wore:
“Natural” was the focus of this maternity session, and we found the perfect outfits in the Reflections studio wardrobe to accomplish that goal. We loved the neutral colours, and simple styles of these outfits. We chose a few different ones for Kylee to add some variation to their photo collection:
Dad in a simple white T-shirt and camel brown pants
Mom in a sage green fitted dress - perfect to accentuate her silhouette and pregnant belly
Mom in a flowy green empire waist dress – this one was perfect for some sunset field photos in the tall grass
Mom in an elegant white sundress. This maxi gown added a refined touch to this set of photos.

The Moments We Captured:
This maternity session dazzles with some really special moments:
We decided beforehand that since Kylee and Stephen’s dog Henry is an integral part of their family he should definitely be in their photos. Just look at the fantastic memories we captured! I think little Dax will have a best friend before long:
I love how we were able to showcase their personality as a couple. Their playful and affectionate natures came out whenever they were together!
How They Preserved Their Memories:
We chose three maternity images to start their story wall, which will grow with their newborn session and future family sessions.
How We’ll Plan Your First Maternity Session:
My goal is to help you fill your home with effortless family memories – in the most luxurious ways.
This means that I make your maternity session as easy and relaxing as possible. You deserve to feel taken care of! And here is how I do it:
Step 1 – Plan:
After you’ve booked a maternity session or first-year collective package, we’ll sit down in a brief meeting to get acquainted! I’ll ask you everything I need to know about your family in order to capture photos that will work seamlessly into your home.
We’ll talk about:
The best time to book your maternity shoot (ideally at 32 weeks)
Whether you’d like outdoor sunset photos or indoor photos at my natural light studio in Grimsby
Your must-have shots
Your wardrobe style preferences
Your family members names (and ages of your children)
Your comfort level in front of the camera
The colours of your home (so we can colour-match your prints well)
(P.S. You’ll have full access to my beautifully curated studio wardrobe with lots of sizes, styles and maternity-wear options! I want you to feel comfortable and beautiful without spending hours online trying to match the perfect outfits. It’s stocked for mothers and the whole family.)
Step 2 – Prepare:
While you’re preparing for your newborn’s arrival, I make your photography preparations easy, and so luxurious.
At this point in our journey, you can sit back and know that things are under control.
While you and your partner are busy setting up the crib, remembering to take your prenatals, and deciding whether or not to use cloth diapers, I will be planning your session, sending you loving thoughts and arranging luxurious moments for you to enjoy.
How I Help You Prepare:
Check your mail for a little gift from me! It will have some self-care items to help you relax leading up to your photo session.
On the day of your photo session, I’ll send my professional hairstylist and makeup artist to your home to help you prepare for your session! My clients love this feature because it removes the stress of trying to get camera-ready all on your own.
I will help you feel natural and comfortable in front of the camera by creating candid moments and guiding you through any pose adjustments.
Step 3 – Preserve:
The final step is your Image Reveal. We’ll meet again shortly after your photo session to see your maternity photos in the studio.
As we savour each photo, we’ll start making notes of your favourite ones so we can design your album and choose the photos you’d like to hang on your walls. I love using my design skills to help my clients choose the best photos for their homes.
There are a few criteria I look at when helping you decide which prints to order:
Which colours will suit your home best
Which photos will showcase well together
How to present the photos (heirloom albums in linen or leather, or professionally framed on a gallery wall)
We’ll work together to display your beautiful new memories in a way you can be proud of every time you see them in your baby’s nursery or around your home.
(And don’t forget, I include professional gallery wall installation to save you the hassle of designing and hanging portraits on your wall. I can’t wait to help you with this!)
Conclusion:
Your first baby is a once-in-a-lifetime moment in your family’s story. While you’re balancing all the demands of life during this time, I am devoted to helping you create, enjoy and preserve the incredible feeling of your maternity journey.

Client Testimonial
”When my significant other mentioned he wanted to do maternity photos, I instantly felt the stress of the process to get photos done. Being in photos have never really been my thing so when we found Karen we couldn’t believe the amount of effort and love she puts into her work.
Karen took all our stress away by being the “one stop shop” for photography. She had beautiful colour scheme ideas for our clothing. It was so nice not having to stress and find something just for photos to fit my baby bump and she had the impossible task of dressing my significant other who normally only wears work clothing.
When it finally came to the day of the shoot I was nervous and excited. Karen was so professional and knew exactly how to get us to laugh and smile for the perfect photos. She eased my nerves within minutes of being with her, and the shoot was so much fun and a great memory Stephen and I will share forever.
The best part was that her hard work doesn’t just stop at the photo shoot. She helped us pick frames that best fit our home decor and the photos that will be placed on my walls for years to come.
Reflections is not just a photographer. It is an experience that I highly suggest to everyone.”- Kylee Robbins
