The Best Time to Book Your Newborn Photos in the Niagara Region & Hamilton

I know how swiftly the first few weeks with a newborn fly by. One moment, you’re bringing your baby home, adjusting to a new routine, and soaking in every little coo and yawn. The next moment, they’re already outgrowing their newborn clothes. As a mom, I remember that blur all too well, and I also remember wishing I had slowed down to capture more of those tiny details.

That’s why planning ahead for your newborn session is so important. If you’re wondering when to book newborn photos, the best time is actually before your baby even arrives!

When Is the Best Age for Newborn Photography?

The ideal time for newborn photos is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this short window, babies are still in that sleepy, curled-up stage, making it much easier to capture those soft, peaceful images that so many parents love.

Why Are the First Two Weeks Best?

Sleepy Poses: Newborns sleep deeply in the first two weeks, allowing for those dreamy, curled-up poses that parents adore.

Easier Transitions: Babies in this stage are more flexible and naturally settle into womb-like positions, making posing gentle and effortless.

Less Baby Acne & Dry Skin: Around the two-week mark, many babies develop newborn acne or flaky skin, which can be more noticeable in photos.

Fewer Startle Reflexes: After two weeks, babies become more alert, stretch out more, and their startle reflex kicks in, making it harder to achieve peaceful, sleepy images.

Capturing the Newborn Stage: This newborn phase is so short-lived. Capturing your baby while they are still tiny and fresh makes for incredibly meaningful memories.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

Since newborn sessions take place so soon after birth, it’s best to book your session during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. This ensures you have a guaranteed spot on my calendar, even if your baby arrives a little earlier or later than expected.

As due dates are unpredictable, I schedule a limited number of newborn sessions each month to keep availability flexible. Once your baby arrives, we’ll confirm the exact session date within that first two-week window.

What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?

If your baby has already passed the two-week mark, don’t worry! You can still capture beautiful newborn-style portraits. While older newborns may not be as curled up or sleepy, they are more alert, which can lead to:

●     Adorable wide-eyed expressions that show their emerging personality.

●     Gentle wrapped poses that keep them cozy and comfortable.

●     Natural, intimate family moments with parents and siblings.

●     More relaxed, lifestyle-inspired photos that focus on connection and emotion.

Every stage is beautiful in its own way, so even if your baby is past the "ideal" window, there are still plenty of ways to capture this special time.
