Pregnancy is such a beautiful time for every family member.  It’s a season of hope and wonder as you wait to meet the newest family member. Sometimes clients will reach out to ask me if it’s okay to bring their older children to their maternity session. The answer is YES! Of course. Maternity portraits are about documenting your pregnancy. It’s also about capturing the love and excitement your family has for the new baby.

I’d love to share the importance of including older children in your maternity session. Here’s how we go about making them feel included throughout the experience.

But first, a little bit about this sweet family. This is Evelina, Vitalie, and their caring and cuddly son Jeremiah. They regret not doing more professional photos for Jeremiah and wanted to document their lives the best they could moving forward. This was our first session together, but they signed up for our first-year collective so you'll see their newborn and one-year sessions as their baby grows.

The Importance of Including Older Children in Your Maternity Portraits

Including your older children helps them feel excited about the new baby and part of the celebration. If you’re feeling guilty because you didn’t have maternity photos with your first child, this is a beautiful way to include them. Plus, I can’t help but capture some of your older children for you to treasure too.

How We Include Older Children in Maternity Sessions

I love pampering my mamas with hair and makeup so that they feel beautiful and confident for the session. You can make the day special for your older children too. Maybe they get a new outfit for the session or treat them to their favorite meal. They’ll feel special and happy about the session.

We’ll include your children in some of the portraits during the session, and they may be mommy’s helpers when they’re not in the photos. We’ll come up with important tasks that only they can do.

If you’re worried about your child cooperating with the session, please don’t. As an experienced family photographer and mom of four, believe me when I say that I’ve seen it all and can handle it all. One of my favourite parts of the session is chatting with your children and asking them questions so that they can warm up and feel comfortable. Actually, I think the favourite part of my job is hearing the children ask their parents when they get to come back.
